How the Philosophical Approaches of these Essays Can Help

  1. At least some of our initial disagreements can be overcome as -- we may discover that these disagreements center not so much on particular claims, but on the more foundational philosophical positions out of which these claims emerge.

  2. As our attention is shifted to the more general philosophical frameworks, we may discern both strengths and weaknesses in our own positions and those of our interlocutors.

  3. As philosophers thus offer us different perspectives on our familiar debates-- we may learn new perspectives and resolutions to the debates not otherwise obvious to us.
