Allucquere Rosanne (Sandy) Stone is currently an
Assistant Professor at the Department of Radio-TV-Film at
the University of Texas at Austin, where she studies issues
related to "interface, interaction, and desire," and also
director of the
Advanced Communication Technologies Laboratory (ACTLAB)
.
Stone's eclectic background has included research
gigs
on the neurological basis of vision and hearing for the
National Institutes of
Health, and for Bell Telephone Laboratories Special Systems
Exploratory Development Group; and work as a computer
programmer,
technical writer and engineering manager in Silicon Valley,
and with
Jimi Hendrix in music recording. She defines her research
interests as "the traffic in the boundaries between art and
technology, which includes performance and performance
theory; interface and interaction theory; cyberspace;
virtual systems; desire, gender and sexuality, and
transgender theory in relation to communication prosthetics.
