Waves...

What started out as a naive attempt by lawyers Canter and Siegel to recruit clients interested in their legal services for immigration has generated off-Net media attention and controversy over Net advertising practices...

Canter and Siegel's story was covered in the New York Times in April and on the CBS Evening News on May 22nd (among much other coverage). In both pieces, the lawyers indicated they would seek to help other businesses advertise on computer networks and that they would continue to advertise on the Net. Meanwhile, Netcom has cancelled the lawyers' Internet access for failing to "comply with the codes of behavior of USENET" and lack of "sensitivity to the cooperative culture of the Internet community" according to Netcom president John Whalen...

At paper-based magazine Internet World: Daniel P. Dern has stepped down as editor with the June issue; Michael Neubarth is the editor as of the July issue... Meanwhile, Mecklermedia announces Mecklerweb, a collection of virtual communities networked for discussion and resources, at Internet World '94 in San Jose early this month... Mecklermedia's Internet World exhibition in London last month was confused, small, crowded, noisy, and full of sound and fury, according to a London source...

Canter and Siegel's adventures continued to be a major Usenet thread... set kill files for "Green Card" :)....

Commercialization of the Internet will be the subject of several sessions at INET '94 in Prague June 14th-17th....

Gender in CMC was the May 16th Newsweek cover story. The article, by Barbara Kantrowitz, explored how the Net doesn't seem to cure stereotypical gender roles and conflicts (surprise!)...
