Fall always reminds me of elections. Last month, we focused on issues of government online. This month, we offer a few more articles on this same theme. The American Civil Liberties Union launched a new newsletter to monitor the myraid of issues involved in free speech and other online issues. Brennon Martin's review of The Electronic Republic: Reshaping Democracy in the Information Age explores how this book takes a look at democracy means online. And we take another look at online campaigning in this month's last link.

We also revisit a recurring theme in this magazine's pages: what is the nature of the online world? Kevin Hunt's review of the book, The Emperor's Virtual Clothes, explores a Thoreau-like journey to understand the Internet and its culture. And Gale Moore points out that the social questions about online interactions are a far more mysterious realm than the technical.
