* Philosophical Approaches to Pornography, Free Speech, and CMC, by Charles Ess

We May Suggest Non-obvious Resolutions

Instead of the usual dilemma we apparently face between potentially authoritarian censorship and absolutely unrestricted free speech--it may be that our choices are more among a continuum which represents greater or lesser degrees of limits on speech. (I will argue this position more fully below.) If this is true, then the usual debate between censorship and free speech turns out to be a false dilemma. We resolve the disagreement not by deciding in favor of one or the other, but by moving beyond what emerges an unnecessarily forced choice between only two options, so as to explore a wider range of possible positions and their supporting arguments. --
